The Nigerian in me

“If you like you all should break this one”, I said as I placed the pitcher (jug) I had just bought on the kitchen counter.
“What does that mean?” Karen asked looking rather confused.
“I mean that you should not break it”, I replied with a sigh.
This was a conversation I had with one of my kiddos after replacing a juice pitcher that they had broken. After this exchange, I realized that most of us are guilty of responding in typical "naija" fashion. We say what we mean in ways that confuse the hearer even more. I mean, how hard was it for me to say exactly what I meant in the first place?
Classic example:
Kid: Where do I put this?
Nigerian parent: Put it on my head.
LOL.
You just have to love Nigerian parents.
I made a mental note to myself to say precisely what I mean… especially when talking with kids. I was embarrassed, to say the least but let us just blame it on the fact that I was having a rough day. Anyway, lesson learnt!
Have you had one of those “Nigerian parent” encounters? Do share.

Until my next post, stay safe, stay strong and keep hope alive!
Love,
Peony N Spice
