Domestic Violence

There was a story that made the news a few days ago about a Florida Pastor, Sylvester Ofori, who killed his wife, Barbara Tommey. In a video, he threatened to kill her in front of her family. I read that she begged her family not to report the incident to the police and it is unclear whether they did.

There were mixed reactions about this story. Some people said she should have left the marriage. She did. Others said, she should have taken the death threats more seriously and reported the threats to the police, gotten a restraining order etc. Well, it looked like her husband was bent on carrying out his threats regardless as it was reported that he followed her to where she worked and killed her in broad daylight just outside her job.

It is such a sad story. Anyone could be a victim of domestic violence. But what can one do in such a situation?

· Recognize the patterns and break the cycle. Know the signs of an abusive relationship.

· Create a safety plan. Learn how to leave dangerous situations and leave when you no longer feel safe.

· Protect your communications and location. Maintain your privacy.

· Seek help immediately. Confide in people you trust. Call a domestic violence hotline, go for counselling, visit a crisis center/mental health center and/or call 911. Just get help!

Do not take the blame for your partner’s inadequacies. It is not your fault. That person is an adult and is responsible for their actions.

It is difficult to admit when you are in an abusive relationship but help is available. Remember that no one deserves to be abused.

Until my next post, stay safe, stay strong and keep hope alive!
